45th Anniversary of Tickle Me Release

2010 marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Tickle Me. The film, produced for Allied Artists by Ben Schwalb and directed by Norman Taurog, opened nationwide on July 7, 1965. In the film, Elvis plays a singing rodeo rider who finds work as a stable hand at an all-female dude ranch.

Elvis received $750,000 to appear in Tickle Me, his 18th film. Due to the fact that Allied Artists was struggling to stay afloat financially, Elvis agreed to take a paycut for his appearance, but adjusted his contract so that he would receive 50% of the films profits, which was quite the negotiation coup at the time. The film's success ended up saving the production company from bankruptcy.

Exhibit takes peek into Elvis' closet; from clothes to bling to bang

It was almost 58 carats smaller than Elizabeth Taylor's big diamond, but, at 11.5 carats, the diamond solitaire added a little extra bling to Elvis Presley's closet.

And, unlike Taylor's diamond, Elvis' ring was surrounded by lightning bolts and his "TCB" emblem.

It is one of the flashiest of 200 items -- from bold orange and purple paisley shirts to 45-caliber pistols with custom-made turquoise handles -- you would have found in Elvis' closet. The closet door officially opens Monday as a new exhibit, "Elvis Presley Fashion King," with a look at outfits, shoes, hats and accessories that Elvis wore offstage.

"These are everyday wear that you might see him in if he went out to the movies or was riding horses or riding a Harley-Davidson on Elvis Presley Boulevard," said catalog and inventory specialist Sheila James in the archives department of Graceland. She was adjusting the collars on one of 50 shirts as visitors stopped by during a soft opening Friday.

Much of the clothing was from the late 1960s and early '70s when fashion was in revolution mode. Few were more revolutionary than Elvis, who helped set fashion trends with hairstyles, turned-up collars, karate-style leisure suits and crushed velvet anything.

While there are plenty of gold and guns, you won't find blue suede shoes or blue denim.

"It's a misconception that Elvis wore blue suede shoes in spite of the song, and blue jeans reminded Elvis of being poor. He rarely wore them except in movies or while working on his ranch," said Graceland spokesman Kevin Kern.

Look closely at the Elvis shirts, and you'll notice many of them had elastic in the wrists and at the elbows, said Graceland archivist Angie Marchese. Elvis liked the "poofy" look that was custom-made by Lansky Brothers on Beale Street and by the Ice Capades Costume Co.

"There's no doubt he had interesting tastes," said Birmingham police officer Sean Richardson as he toured the exhibit Friday. "I think it was pretty outlandish, but I think everything back then was like that."

High school science teacher Amy Dertlin of Pueblo, Colo., said, "It's enjoyable to see the outlandish clothes, but also how good he looked in them. And I'm envious of all his jewelry."

Elvis' Birth is Timeline Winner for March

The winning Elvis timeline milestone for February that Elvis fans voted as their number one favorite Elvis moment is #1 - Elvis is born at 4:35 a.m. in a two-room house in Tupelo, MS. For this timeline event, we will take a look at Elvis' humble beginnings in Tupelo, which definitely helped shape the man and legend the world came to know as Elvis Presley.

Elvis Presley was born in a two-room house in Tupelo, MS on January 8, 1935, to Gladys and Vernon Presley. Dr. William R. Hunt attended the birth, and helped deliver Elvis and his twin brother, Jesse Garon. Jesse arrived about a half-hour before Elvis, but sadly, was delivered stillborn.

Events in Elvis' childhood helped send him down the path towards music, paving the way for his rise to superstardom. In Tupelo, Elvis sang gospel in the Assembly of God church, creating his passion for Gospel music, which he carried with him throughout his life. On his 11th birthday, Elvis genuinely wanted a bicycle. However, his parents could not afford the bicycle, so he settled for a guitar. Elvis' talent was undeniable, but his hard work ethic and drive to succeed, no doubt, stemmed from his poverty-stricken background and his desire to make a better life for himself and his family.

Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' Tops The Charts: Wake-Up Video

There were a handful of things we could have celebrated this morning. After all, today is the birthday of Charlie and Craig Reid (better known as the Proclaimers, who scored one of the biggest one hit wonders of all time with "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"). Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante will also be blowing out candles today, as he turns 40 years old (hopefully he celebrates with a little "Californication"). But just as we did last week, today we celebrate Michael Jackson's ascent to superstardom.

On this day in 1983, "Billie Jean" found itself at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. The second single from Thriller bounded over Patti Austin and James Ingram's "Baby, Come to Me" to take the top spot, where it stayed for seven weeks before being ousted by (of all things) "Come on Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners. One week later, Jackson would top the charts again with "Beat It," a track that would reign for another three weeks until it was displaced by "Flashdance ... What a Feeling."

"Billie Jean" remains one of the cornerstone's of Jackson's deep catalog and storied career. Though there was never actually a Billie Jean, Jackson always said that the girl in the song was a composite of the types of women who used to follow around the Jackson 5. "The kid is not my son" is a pretty racy chorus lyric for a chart-topping song (then again, the Police's "Every Breath You Take," which also topped the charts in '83, is just as intense). But "Billie Jean" lives on because of the killer bassline, the deft blending of disco and R&B and the distinctive video, which saw a tuxedo-clad Jackson dancing his way across that iconic light-up sidewalk.
