First look: Cirque du Soleil's 'Viva ELVIS' is larger than life
By Marco R. della Cava, USA TODAY
LAS VEGAS — Elvis is back in the building.
Swiveling, laughing, crooning and goofing, the King of Rock 'n' Roll explodes to life on a massive screen here in the new Aria Resort & Casino's Elvis Theater. Below this video clip of Presley, 40-some dancers and acrobats with blue loafers on their hands vamp through a Blue Suede Shoesretooled for the times – Elvis' voice laid over a thunderous romp that respectfully teases the original.
Having tackled The Beatles with LOVE, Canada's Cirque du Soleil takes on an American musical icon with Viva ELVIS. The show is unveiled to the public Dec. 18, two days after Aria opens in The Strip's newly built CityCenter district.
Rehearsals reveal a production that aims both to please die-hards (the nearly 30 songs feature Elvis on vocals) and seduce newcomers (the music is modernized and the sets are spectacle writ large).
"Our responsibility was to develop something that would look like what Elvis might do were he performing now," says executive producer Stephane Mongeau."It's not a show about Elvis. It's a show with him."
Unlike LOVE, which mates the Fab Four's whimsy with acrobatics, Elvis' straight-ahead canon necessitated an emphasis on music rather than circus.
"The driver here is Elvis' songs," says Mongeau, who notes that while LOVE uses snippets of 160 tunes, Viva ELVIS lingers on legendary hits such as I Want You, I Need You, I Love You and Suspicious Minds.
The talent pool assembled for this production is varied and impressive, including set designer Mark Fisher (the architect behind U2's innovative 360 Tour set) and choreographer Vincent Paterson (who has worked with Michael Jackson and Madonna).
"My goal is to give Elvis a Vegas comeback," says Paterson, the show's director.
It has been more than three decades since Elvis sold out the nearby Hilton Hotel. Today, seeing Elvis means hearing impersonators who freeze the icon in a bygone era. That irks Priscilla Presley, whose ex-husband would have turned 75 next month: "We have to keep Elvis in our times, not in the past."
She welcomed the young cast (many of whom were born after Elvis' death in 1977) to Graceland last spring to share personal stories about the man behind the myth. But an affinity already existed.
"Cirque du Soleil is known for taking risks, as Elvis was," she says. "But if I'm happiest about anything, it's the decision they made to let Elvis himself do the singing."

Bad World Tour
The Bad World Tour was the first world concert tour by Michael Jackson as a solo artist, covering Japan, Australia, United States and Europe from September 12, 1987 to January 27, 1989. The tour, sponsored by PepsiCo and spanning 16 months, included 123 concerts to 4.4 million fans across 15 countries. When the tour concluded it grossed a total of $125 million, adding two new entries in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest grossing tour in history and the tour with the largest attended audience. In the United States alone, where just 54 concerts were held, the tour came in as the 6th largest grossing tour from 1988-89, grossing a total of $20.3 million.
In April 1989, the tour was nominated for "Tour of the Year 1988" at the inaugural International Rock Awards. The tour lost to Amnesty International, but nothing could detract from the fact that Jackson's first solo tour was the largest and most successful in history.
At every concert (at least in the United States) Jackson made sure that 400 tickets were reserved for underprivileged children. These tickets were distributed across hospitals, orphanages and charities. Jackson also donated concert takings to multiple causes.

Sonic Boom: Michael Jackson lives on in classic video game soundtrack
Posted: December 03, 2009, 2:14 PM by Adam S. Miller
Rumours have been swirling since 1993, and orchestral composer Brad Buxer finally confirmed in the latest issue of Black & White magazine (a French publication dedicated to reporting on everything MJ) that Michael Jackson played a big part in the composition of the music for the classic Sega Genesis video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Specifically, it is said that the ending credits are very similar to MJ's and the game helped develop the chord arrangement for the song "Stranger in Moscow." The interview with Buxer, who had worked with MJ on many musical projects in the past, reads as follows:
B&W: Can you clarify the rumor that Michael had in 1993 composed the music for Sonic 3 video game, for which you have been credited?
Buxer: I've never played the game so I do not know what tracks on which Michael and I have worked the developers have kept, but we did compose music for the game. Michael called me at the time for help on this project, and that's what I did.
And if he is not credited for composing the music, it's because he was not happy with the result sound coming out of the console. At the time, game consoles did not allow an optimal sound reproduction, and Michael found it frustrating. He did not want to be associated with a product that devalued his music...
B&W: One of the surprising things in this soundtrack is that you can hear the chords from Stranger in Moscow, which is supposed to have been composed later...
Buxer: Yes, Michael and I had composed those chords for the game, and it has been used as base for Stranger in Moscow. [...]
There are conflicting reports that MJ dropped out in the end due to either rising controversy surrounding his court cases or as noted in the interview, his general frustration with the audio output of the Sega Genesis console. Either way it's good to see this rumour finally confirmed, and the legend of MJ lives on in what is no doubt his greatest musical contribution ever. To read everything you could ever possibly want to know on the topic, check out the Sonic Retro Wiki which has an organized collection of all things related to the Jacko-Hedgehog controversy, or check out this YouTube video that compares songs from MJ and the game.

Jackson film not part of Sony's new 3-D vision
By YURI KAGEYAMA - AP Business Writer
TOKYO -- Michael Jackson videos or the next Spider-Man movie won't be among the titles that Sony Corp. releases in 3-D as it gears up to boost TV sales with that technology, Chief Executive Howard Stringer said Thursday.
"I don't think that would make sense to be honest," he said in an interview at the Japanese electronics and entertainment company's Tokyo headquarters. "I don't think it will reveal anything else about Michael Jackson we would want to be see."
"Michael Jackson's This Is It," a Sony film about the King of Pop's final rehearsals before his June 25 death, has grossed more than $70 million in the U.S., and Sony is planning to release CDs and DVDs of the film.
In this Oct. 28, 2009 photo, Sony Corporation Chief Executive Officer and President Howard Stringer, center, smiles with Japanese guests at Japan premiere of "Michael Jackson's This is it" in Tokyo, Japan. Michael Jackson videos or the next Spider-Man movie won't be among the titles that Sony Corp. releases in 3-D as it gears up to boost TV sales with that technology, Stringer said Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009.

The Jackson release has been one bright spot in a dismal earnings year for Sony, which has been battered by plunging global demand and a strengthening yen.
Stringer said he didn't think the next "Spider-Man" sequel would be in 3-D either, but a 3-D version of "Men in Black" was being considered. It was unclear what titles in Sony's extensive film library might be reissued in 3-D, he added.
With 3-D TVs, viewers perceive an illusion of depth when they wear special glasses. Sony has said it expects a third to a half of Sony TVs on sale will be packed with 3-D features in three years time.
Stringer was confident Sony will finally reap the benefits of being a company whose businesses span video games, gadgets, music and movies. The company has often pointed to its ownership of content as an advantage over competitors but benefits in boosting gadget sales have so far proved illusory.
Besides forays into 3-D, Stringer believes Sony couldn't have won the Blu-ray disc format war against HD-DVD without its strong relations with Hollywood studios.
Sony Pictures includes Columbia, Tristar and a home entertainment division. Sony, which makes Bravia TVs and PlayStation 3 game consoles, is also part of a consortium that owns MGM.
Blu-ray disc won the format battle in high-definition TVs last year, partly because of backing from Hollywood.
Sony's online service, set to be expanded next year from a version now offered for PlayStation 3, is another way its strength in entertainment will work as a plus, Stringer said. The service will offer downloads of games, video and other entertainment, according to Sony.
"You cannot create stand-alone hardware that has value by itself anymore unless you have some differentiating software," said Stringer.
Welsh-born American Stringer has promised "synergy" from owning hardware and software businesses since taking the helm as the first foreigner to head Sony in 2005.
But Stringer said he needed the latest management shuffle, which he spearheaded eight months ago, to remove barriers between Sony's sprawling businesses that he said operated like "silos" - not communicating effectively and sometimes competing.
"I do feel the group is operating in harmony and in the same direction," he said.
Under a comeback plan announced by Stringer last month, Sony is introducing a wireless version of its electronic book Reader later this year in the U.S., targeting 40 percent market share by the fiscal year ending March 2013.
The company is also developing its own display for TVs and lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
Sony is still struggling, expecting its second straight annual loss for the fiscal year through March 2010. The $1 billion of red ink racked up the previous fiscal year was its first annual loss in 14 years.

É colaborador do Guardian e da Time Out.»
