Elvis on Chinese TV
Here's Elvis Presley on Chinese TV. The King is affectionately remembered in China, making the news because of a new album to mark his 75th birthday. He would have been 75 on January 8 next year.
Elvis 75: Good Rockin' Tonight, released by RCA/Legacy, features 13 classics:
That's All Right: Recorded in 1954 in Memphis
Baby, Let's Play House: 1955, Memphis
Hound Dog: 1956, New York
Don't Be Cruel: 1956, New York
One Night: 1957, Hollywood
Blue Christmas: 1957, Hollywood
How Great Thou Art: 1966, Nashville
If I Can Dream: 1968, Hollywood
Suspicious Minds: 1969, Memphis
Stranger In My Home Town: 1969, Memphis
An American Trilogy: 1972, Las Vegas
Burning Love: 1972, Hollywood
Always On My Mind: 1972, Hollywood
My favourite here? One Night. Check the Los Angeles Times review.
And here's how China's CCTV.com reported the release of the new album. It's an affectionate tribute to the King. Born in 1935, he was only 42 when he died on August 16 in 1977.
The rock-a-billy style of Elvis Presley came out of his own roots in the southern United States.
Now, his fans are set to get 'All Shook Up' over a new 4-CD compilation detailing the entire recording career of 'The King of Rock-n-Roll.' The collection is being released to coincide with what would have been the King's 75th birthday, next month.
Elvis may have left the building, but he never left the hearts of his legions of fans.
To mark the King of Rock's 75th birthday next month, RCA/Legacy is releasing a 4-CD compilation, 'Elvis 75: Good Rockin' Tonight.' The collection includes 100 digitally restored tracks including hit singles, rare cuts, live performances, and all 30 number-one songs such as 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Hound Dog', 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'Suspicious Minds'. The set also features a 7-thousand word essay by music critic and historian Billy Altman, along with many rarely seen photographs.
Altman says unlike previous 'Best Of' compilations, this one contains the rock legend's entire career.
Presley died on August 16th, 1977 at the age of 42, yet he remains one of the most recognizable faces of American music and popular culture. He starred in 33 films and received gold, platinum, or multi-platinum awards for 150 different albums and singles.
The release of 'Elvis 75: Good Rockin' Tonight' coincides with a 4-day celebration of his 75th birthday from January 8th, 2010. Altman says that if Presley was still alive today, the music icon would probably have returned to his earlier roots.
Billy Altman, music critic and historian, said, "I think that he would have turned into something different. I think at the time that he passed away he had gotten so much back in touch with his country and his gospel roots and I think if he was alive today he would have been 75 this January, I think he would have been kind of an elder statesman, probably more of country music than anything else which was really his first love."
'Elvis 75: Good Rockin' Tonight' is now available, with a 26-track 'Elvis 75' single CD hitting store shelves on January 5th, 2010.

How to Understand Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley
Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley were certainly kings in the jungle of music and pop culture. Unfortunately for them, their similarities didn't provide them with the lion's share of fortune.
Since Michael Jackson's recent death, there has been much speculation on the negative effects that fame and fortune can have on a person's life. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are two prime iconic examples of how the pressure of fame can take its toll. There are five reasons why both the king of pop and the king of rock-n-roll had lives that ended way too soon.
1. Both musical artists came from haunting backgrounds that forced them to have unrealistic expectations in life. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley had father figures who were demanding and at times, cruel. This scenario left them with a fear of being under the control or influence of others. As a result, both kings were dissatisfied and unfulfilled when they weren't in total control of their destinies. Oddly enough, this daunting fear of being controlled is exactly what happened. During most of their public lives, handlers who forced their every move controlled them.
2. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley came from poor backgrounds and lifestyles that placed them in the lowest socio economic class. Due to their poor childhoods, they became irresponsible once the flow of income, the fortune, dramatically increased. Elvis and Michael were known to be compulsive shoppers. Consequently, both of the musical icons wound up heavily indebted to creditors and agents alike. Heavy debt loads can be one of the greatest causes of stress in modern society because there is not usually an easy way out.
3. Due to the extravagant amounts of income they received, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson craved large estates they could call home. Graceland and Neverland were elaborate and overly dramatic places to take up residence. From the Jungle Room to the Ferris wheel, these mansions became the exact opposite of what they were intended to be. These highly visible, exotic estates became places where the public thronged leaving little room for privacy and relaxation. Unfortunately, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley had no real place for their weary souls to rest.
4. With fame and fortune came privilege and accessibility to abusive substances that were not appropriately monitored or discontinued. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley had very little accountability for the abuse that their physical and mental bodies suffered. When you are the king of pop or the king of rock-n-roll, doctors are more likely to provide drugs, or combinations of drugs, that are used to please and seduce the patient. After all, the private physicians were making their entire livelihood off of these celebrities. Both Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley used drugs to appease their inner turmoil, and no one stopped them.
5. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley lived in fear. There is nothing more dreaded or scary than living a life in constant fear and paranoia. Fame and fortune gave Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley the opportunity to entertain audiences from all over the world. The live stage gave them a place of acclaim and prestige. Unfortunately, the mass hysteria that followed these musical icons left them feeling paranoid of outsiders, overly cautious of germs, and distrustful of people in general. What a lonely and isolated existence.
6. Surviving the jungle of fame and fortune was a heavy burden, for both Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley, to bear. The pressure from the dysfunctional lifestyles that they led resulted in premature death and tumultuous fame for both of these musical icons.

Confirmed: Michael Jackson’s Captain EO Returns to Disneyland
Disney Parks has confirmed that Honey I Shrunk The Audience will be closing sometime in the next few weeks to make way for the the return of the Francis Ford Coppola-directed/George Lucas-produced Michael Jackson sci-fi action 3D musical short film Captain EO. The original film will return to Disneyland’s Tomorrowland beginning in February 2010.
Rumors that the attraction would return to the Southern California theme park hit the web in September, but were quickly denied by the mouse house. Bob Iger admitted at the time that Disney was considering the possibility but that “It’s the kind of thing that, if we did it, would get a fair amount of attention and we’d want to make sure we do it right.” Many people took the comment as meaning that Disney wanted to update the attraction in ways to appeal to today’s audiences.
The 17-minute film cost a record $17 million in 1986, a cost of about one million dollars per minute of film, this was, minute for minute, the most expensive motion picture of all time. If you adjust that number for inflation, it rises to almost $35 million. That’s a lot of money for a $17 million short film. Another fun factoid is that Steven Spielberg was originally signed on to direct the movie but had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts with his other film projects. The film opened in Epcot and Disneyland in mid-September 1986, Tokyo Disneyland in March 1987, and Disneyland Park (Paris) in 1992). All four installations were closed down by 1998.
The story followed Captain Eo and his rugged ragtag crew who went on a mission to deliver a special gift to a wicked queen (played by Anjelica Huston) who lives on a dark, desolate world. Captain EO can be found online on many of the video sharing websites.
The film featured two songs, “We Are Here to Change the World” and “Another Part of Me” by Michael Jackson. The action on the screen was recreated for the live audience using lasers, laser impacts, smoke effects, and starfields that filled the theater. The presentation was replaced by Honey I Shrunk the Audience, another live interaction 3D short.

Is the Michael Jackson Tribute Canceled?
The upcoming tribute to Michael Jackson may not be happening now that the Austrian company that was organizing the event is being dissolved.
According the Associated Press, the company World Awards Media released a statement issued by its majority owner Superfund saying that the decision to dissolve the company was made back in November.
Michael's brother Jermaine has not revealed whether the tribute, scheduled for June of 2010 in London, would still take place.

Viva Elvis Footage & News
Cirque Du Soleil posted a clip with 'Viva Elvis' footage on their YouTube channel. The performance for the press last Tuesday was not the full show, since the cast is still rehearsing. The press has seen a preview with just a few acts that will be part of the complete show. Elvis fans will be more interested to listen to this clip than to see the footage, since this is the first time we can hear samples of what they have done with Elvis' voice and the new musical backings.
The Review-Journal has learned that Cirque du Soleil has moved the “Viva Elvis” gala opening to February 19 for a combination of reasons.

Dangerous World Tour
The Dangerous World Tour was the second world concert tour by Michael Jackson as a solo artist, covering Europe, Latin America and Asia from June 27, 1992 to November 11, 1993. The tour, sponsored by Pepsi-Cola, who also sponsored Jackson's previous tour, included 69 concerts to 3.9 million fans. The tour grossed up approximately $100 million and all profits were donated to various charities including the new Heal the World Foundation that was set up by Jackson.
During the tour's second leg in 1993, Jackson decided to end the tour due to, as he announced, illness which ultimately resulted in hospitalization. Jackson had become dependent on painkillers and suffered from dehydration, migraines, back aches, frequent ankle injuries and stress following the child molestation charges made against him.

Others include 'Jailhouse Rock' (November 1957), 'Can't Help Falling In Love' (December 1961), 'In the Ghetto' (July 1969) and 'Suspicious Minds' (October 1969). Although Elvis never travelled to Australia, it was, and remains, one of his most successful territories outside of the United States. He is ranked #1 Solo Male Artist in this territory with the most #1s (1956 to 2009) with 14 #1 singles in this period. He also has the record for the number of years between his first #1 single and his last one - the first was in May 1959 with 'A Fool Such As I', the last in June 2002 with 'A Little Less Conversation'. In this period he had 120 chart topping singles.

Golden Globe(R) and Multiple Primetime Emmy(R) Nominated Motion Picture
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Few figures in popular culture have endured in our collective consciousness as has multi-Grammy® Award-winning artist Elvis Presley. Crowned as the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Presley's revolutionary rockabilly music and captivating performances were as much a part of his legend as his uninhibited hip swivels, blue suede shoes, his charm and good looks. There have been motion pictures, television specials and books chronicling the roller-coaster life of Elvis Presley, and one of the most successful of these properties came in the acclaimed 1979 film ELVIS, starring Golden Globe nominee Kurt Russell in the title role, directed by John Carpenter. This highly regarded production captures the essence of The King at a time when his many fans were still mourning his passing. Hailed by audiences as one of the most powerful and moving biographical films, ELVIS garnered a Golden Globe nomination and multiple Emmy® nominations, including one for Kurt Russell as Outstanding Lead Actor for his incandescent performance as the King of Rock 'n' Roll. The film also marked Carpenter and Russell's first collaboration in what would become a legendary pairing.
Timed closely to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Elvis Presley's birth, Shout! Factory, in association with dick clark Productions, present ELVIS on DVD for the first time March 2, 2010. This collectible DVD features the main presentation of the movie restored from the original film elements as it was meant to be seen, as well as an array of bonus features including: "Bringing A Legend To Life," a featurette with archival interviews of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter (1979); commentary by "The Voice Of Elvis," Ronnie McDowell, and author Edie Hand; rare clips and captivating photo gallery. Even 33 years after his passing, Presley continues to burn a powerful image of rock stardom and still conquers new legions of fans through his indelible mark in worldwide pop culture. Available for the first time in the home entertainment marketplace, this long-awaited DVD debut of the film ELVIS is priced to own at $19.97.
Directed by John Carpenter, the biopic of Elvis Presley stars Kurt Russell and features the voice of '70s country music hitmaker Ronnie McDowell re-creating Presley's signature vocals. Tracing Presley's life from his impoverished childhood to his meteoric rise to stardom to his triumphant return to Las Vegas, this film boasts an all-star ensemble including Academy Award® winner Shelley Winters (A Place In The Sun) as Elvis' mother Gladys; Season Hubley (All My Children) as his wife Priscilla; Kurt Russell's real-life father Bing Russell (The Magnificent Seven) as Elvis's father Vernon Presley; Pat Hingle (Batman) as Colonel Tom Parker; Robert Gray (Murder She Wrote) as Red West; Golden Globe nominee Joe Mantegna (Searching for Bobby Fischer) as Memphis mafia member Joe Esposito; and Golden Globe nominee Ed Begley Jr. (St. Elsewhere) as D.J.

Cirque du Soleil's 'Viva Elvis' serves the king
The show has a VIP opening tonight. 'It's not a show about Elvis, it's a show with Elvis,' the producer says.
A performer rehearses beside an Elvis statue for Cirque du Soleil's "Viva Elvis," which has a VIP opening performance Tuesday night. (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times / December 14, 2009)
"Really, overall that's all he wanted," Ste-Croix said. "He was a great performer and he wanted to entertain the crowd. And that's what he did at the Hilton, that's what he did in the movies and that's what he did all his life."
Today, Cirque du Soleil, which already has six Las Vegas-based shows including "O," "Zumanity" and the Beatles homage "Love," is a brand name that defines Las Vegas much as Presley did in his day.
The Montreal-based company is partnered in its latest enterprise with CKX Inc., a mega-manager-owner of entertainment-related content and intellectual properties, and its subsidiary Elvis Presley Enterprises, the corporate entity created by Presley's trust to manage its assets.
Return of the king
Among those attending tonight's VIP performance will be the best-known guardian of that trust, the king's ex-wife Priscilla Presley. Speaking by phone, Priscilla Presley acknowledged she was feeling a bit, uh, all shook up about the opening, albeit in a positive way.
"I feel like it's the first time that Elvis went on stage," she said. "It's just nerve-racking."
In that regard, Presley could be channeling her ex, who when he performed in Las Vegas grew antsier by the minute as an opening-night audience that included Pat Boone, Cary Grant and Fats Domino filed into the Showroom Internationale. "He didn't want to know who was out there in the crowd," Priscilla Presley said.
Yet his show was an immediate success, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the gambling mecca. According to Ste-Croix, at one point during Presley's appearances, one out of every two Las Vegas tourists was coming to town specifically to attend his concerts.
"I think he put Vegas on the map in a way that it hadn't been," Priscilla Presley said. Las Vegas returned the favor, she added, by giving her ex-husband a way to relaunch his career as a live performer after a 10-year absence from big stages.
"It brought him back to the forefront and it brought him back to what he loved most. It brought him back in contact with the audience and with his fans," she said.
Given its show's unabashedly celebratory spirit, it's not surprising that Cirque isn't touching those aspects of Elvis' life that have kept conspiracy theorists, tabloid journalists, assistant professors of American studies and schadenfreude mongers in clover for 32 years.
Priscilla Presley said that no preconditions or restrictions were set on what could, or could not, be included in "Viva Elvis." But she clearly seems pleased with Cirque's artistic focus, and suggests that a show about Elvis is better off without scholarly footnotes.
"I think he's been over-analyzed," she said. "I think if he ever heard the stuff, he'd be shaking in his boots. It was all about entertaining, it was all about rapport with your audience and giving them their money's worth."
Her hope, she said, is that "Viva Elvis" could do for Las Vegas today what Elvis' appearances did in a previous era beset by economic hard times.
"I'm hoping this'll renew Vegas again and get people back to work," Priscilla Presley said, adding that in the '70s everyone from waiters to blackjack dealers and limousine drivers felt the impact of the king's return to his court.
"Everybody was happy when Elvis Presley came to town."
